Facebook and Instagram are Toxic Shitpools of Misery and Misinformation and You Should Quit Them

This week, further research by The Guardian, Time, and the Wall Street Journal documented what we already knew. The Zuckerberg empire is ruining lives. For real.

First, Facebook is a spread vector for misinformation and it bends its own rules when the content producer (or mis-informer) helps their revenue model reports The Guardian.

This goes against their historical “We’re just a platform 🤷 can’t hold us accountable for what users do here.” If you’re intervening and making editorial decisions, you’re an editor, you’re not a platform and the same level of scrutiny of the information you support is reasonable.

On top of this, Instagram’s (owned by Facebook) own research documents that they know (paywalled) Instagram is toxic and dangerous — and especially so for teenage girls.

Time followed the bandwagon with a thin post summarizing the upshot from the previous articles: “Instagram is bad for Gen Z’s mental health”

In short, Facebook properties are [dangerous for the old][1], dangerous for the young, and are all poisoned by being part of a site that was, primarily, designed to help some nerds stalk, and then rate girls in a private digital tree-house.
