You may see my last post in which I ask, how can it be that here in Austin there is nothing to do on Sunday night?

Well, Lauren and I took a wild stab at a solution and went to the campus area’s venerable “Hole in the Wall” for “shoegaze” night. I figured it couldn’t be all that bad as I always had a bit of a think for My Bloody Valentine.

We headed down and the bar was sparsely populated. Many people were seated out in the hallway alongside and in back of the bar, sitting in the humid night air with sweating bar glasses stacking indefatigably higher.

We played a game of foosball and I got shellacked. Our pool games that came after were much more balanced but I think I ended up losing that series as well.

Eventually the first band came on and sure enough, they were latter–day disciples drunk from the fountain of St. Greenwood.

This morning I got up and watched the ending of “Shine”, the movie that gives you way-too-many opportunities to view Captain Barbaossa’s butt. I thought the pivotal scene of the Rachmaninoff 3 concerto was absolutely astounding. The emotional scenes between young Noah Taylor and Armin Mueller-Stahl are among the most wrenching put to film.

I think the thing with slow Sundays in this town is that Monday is a school day, in both the literal and figurative sense. This town has stuff going on 5-6 days a week, and does really well on Thursday-Saturday. I’m not sure what sort of three-ring circus you guys had going on in the Bay Area, but Sunday is usually the day to do chores, etc… and get yourself together for the work week here in Austin.

That said: TXRD had a bout on Sunday. So Sunday wasn’t totally devoid of activity.

Lauren and I discussed the matter some and we came to the conclusion that what we used to do was watch tv It’s a comfortable default mode and, if I recall, they do the nighttime soaps that night.

But if you don’t have to go to work on Monday, what ought you do?

In my case, stay home and try not to blow too fast through what cash you do have…

It’s sort fo one of those things. It’s like being concerned that the banks aren’t open when you get off second shift at the factory at midnight. The commercial world serves the most people who are awake at any given moment.

Movies on Sunday nights at a late show are always good as most folks already DID that between Friday and Sunday, mid-day. But you can still be ready for water cooler conversation on Monday morning.

Also: there’s just drinking yourself into oblivion in the dark in your own home.
