In a previous post I told about driving through the Barton Hills neighborhood and coming across the beautiful St. Mark’s Episcopal church. During this drive there was an excellent song playing on Andy Langer’s “The Next Big Thing” on 101x.
The musicians were “Band of Horses” and the song was “Funeral” which you can find here. Band of Horses is on the seminal Sub Pop label. Check it out.

steven,
don’t know if you remember me but i was friends with Megan [ Last name removed for privacy - sgh ] bk in the day (think six, seven years bk?) i was at magnolia cafe on S. Congress this saturday morning and my shortstack came with a papercup-side of whipped butter, butterside down on the stack, and i recalled a breakfast we four—you, Megan, me and my brother Guillermo, who’s now in/near Ramadi, Iraq and sends you his best—spent there and you received a shortstack in much the same way. we all looked at yr pancakes, a quarter-beat to take in the appearance of the dish, and then you remarked, “oh my masonic breathren must be summoning me; if you’ll excuse me…” and you got up and went to the bathroom to wash yr hands. i still laugh about that.
past two weeks i’ve been reading jeff wilson’s blog and saw your post; thanks for your words…yr pithy spirited quotation offset the wayward ramblings of whoever that Jesus freak was from earlier in the comment thread. good to hear that you’ve come bk to Austin and that life’s treating you kind. email me when you get a chance and i’d like to catch up with you if possible.

For anyone reading comments, I send THE VERY AWESOME Don Alfredo Tómas Garcia IV an ebullient email thanking him for getting in contact with me.
Perhaps I shall have to start a series of blog posts called “The Season of Renewed Cycles”.

steven,
i came back to the computer after surveying the grounds, sans walking stick, here at the courthouse—you’ll be glad to know they’re in good shape for this season; lack of rain, loittering crackwhores and baggypanted na’er-do-wells notwithstanding—and saw this response of yours. good of you to write back, old man; damn shame, what, as much time has passed since last we cooresponded. you and your lovely better half seem well, judging from your posted blog pics.
if you have time next Tuesday, my friend Brit and I have a semi-regular pint night that revolves and relocates to a different bar each Tuesday, perhaps we’ll be at one nearer to thee? if all this yoga and roller derby spectating has you turning away from pints and conversation, then perhaps i could dig up Ye Olde Reed Yogamat from the garage and get my fiance Nicole to join you for a Hatha or Bikram session at Yoga Yoga. then again, i could just as well grab my helmet, kneepads, tube socks, skates and “Danger:High Voltage” yellow short-shorts, with the white sidepiping, out of Salvation Army donation bag and show the rollergirls a thing or three out on the track, if you or those in attendance could stand the spectacle … drop me an email and lemme know.

a very brief word: my middle name as you’ve written it reads as the 2nd person present indicative of the Spanish verb “tomar,” meaning “to take,” or “to drink.” a small matter, to be sure, but with an accent over the ultimate vowel “a,” the name would then read as the spanish version of “thomas.” i like the way you’re thinking, though; yr spelling renders thus my entire name in English being translated as “Alfred ‘Drink Ya!’ Herron.” spanish grammar lesson aside, i think it a good idea to start your blog series of “Renewed Cycles,” but i would ask that it be completed with accompanying dramatic soundtrack of selections from perhaps Wagner “Ring Cycle” and/or some choice bits from early-mid ’70s period Rush, i’m thinking, of course, “2112,” or even something from “a farewell to kings” here. lemme know where you decide to go with this…-A.

what are some good places to go for pints?

Person,
Depends what you’re in the mood for. Typically drinking in Austin can be divided into icehouse-stylee or bar-stylee. Icehouse stylee prides itself on patios, terraces, cold bottles o’ Shiner, shady trees, and yummy finger foods. Of this nature: Waterloo Ice House, Shady Grove come to mind. Closer to campus the Posse West is a good watering hole as well.
As far as Bar style drinking, for serious pints i don’t think anything beats the big bars on 4th street: The Ginger Man (dozens of beers on draft) or Fado (commonly called Fa-don’t).
There are also some wine bars.
A great bar is at the hotel San Jose (it’s a wine bar) but it has a great patio area.
I’m sure Don Alfredo has some more excellent recommendations, being a habitué of South Austin (where that which is very hip begins).
Being warm and somewhat humid at night, you can stay out late in shorts and a T and relax under shady oaks with jangly guitar and sweaty glasses of frosty brew. Tasty!

Goddam Alfredo, I’ve been missing you too long.
I had to recount to my lady your gathering the tweed jacket, hunting cap, and walking-stick at the ranch that one spring.
Just when you think your cleaning up breakfast dishes is done, out comes Don Alfredo Tom&aactue;s Garcia in a tweed grounds-keepers jacket , with coordinated hat, looking like a be-spectacled, Spanish Sean Connery from “Darby O’ Gill and the Little People”.

i second the Ginger Man recommendation. great interior / atmosphere, lots of beer to choose from, lively but not a goddman cacophonous firetrap like the rest of the bars on sixth street.
if you like to chill out with your barley-based drinks, it’s the tops.
