Oprah + Cormac = BFF

Friday, March 30th, 2007

I’ll not do a “he’s a little bit country, she’s a little bit rock-n-roll” comparison, but Oprah has chosen for her book club the sparse, scary, and beautiful as a razor blade novel “The Road” for her book club selection for the month as reported by the Chicago Tribune.

I’m still in awe of this book.

Much hay is being made of the “Will the Wally Lamb fan set” who adhere to the Prophetess of the Miracle Mile be willing to ditch the South Beach and Hoodia chick-lit to which they’ve been accustomed for a world so isolated, devoid, and scary?

Ultimately, The Road, for its post-apocalyptic setting and disturbing themes is a story of paternal love and adults’ search for meaning as thrown into stark relief against the innocent optimism of a child. The loneliness of the road is merely metaphor for that dark road we all have occasion to walk when the stars are hidden, our loved ones are sleeping, and we wonder if we are truly understood.

And the want of understanding is certainly something universal.

Conversations with my mom…

Who will doubtless comment here.

I asked her what she and my stepfather did for her birthday.

“Oh we went out to the movie theater. Being a small town I had already seen one of the movies there so we saw 300”.

Mom.

Just in case you started to feel that the universe had lost its center, rest assured, they walked out.

The yak-shaving is out of control

In what first started out as “can i make a rounded corners square”, I have now undertaken an entire site redesign and am about 40% through it I’d guess.

Is this making progress on the Mellies app? Is this doing amazing things in Ruby?

No, instead it’s been time with me running a lot of Textmate and The Gimp.

And Helvetica, a lot of Helvetica.

Order of operations…

Where’s the SXSW2007 wrap-up?

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

I apologize.

I was thinking about reviewing movies, and then I decided I would make a cool scorecard in CSS for them on some rounded corner squares, and then I wound up reading about how to do rounded corners, and then I wound up testing the corners and getting stupid fricking Internet exploder to do it right, and then I shaved a yak

I’m working on a post about my favorite topics: GRIDS and what I’ve done with that information afterwards.

Is Steven web2.0?

Web 2.0 Status

“Rounded corners” is an assured way to show your Web 2.0 status. I was thinking about making all my
posts show in a box like this. Any opinions?

I’m also running “PHP Smartypants” which is a PHP implementation of John Gruber’s “SmartyPants” algorithm that makes quotes pretty typographically correct quotes. It allows you to use “—” en-dash and “—” em-dash. It also makes you feel slightly superior to everyone else in a non-specific way — a bit like owning a Mac…

The 12th was the last full day post SXSW Interactive so Lauren and I decided to camp finish off the conference with two movies ( sorry MediaTemple after-party ).

After having our brain matter crammed full of AJAX and Typography and XML and Design it was time for us to catch a much more passive form of entertainment.

We got home at 0400 from a night out filled with music. I’m getting a bit homesick for my Normal Life. See you when I get back.

Ack, dmiessler, getting sneaky on me

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

So I was recuperating ( by writing Rails code, what other way is there? ) and, stuck on a problem, i decided to visit good old dmiessler.com and he has hit me up with a bloggers game.

My favorite sites are mostly friends’ sites:

  1. The League of Melbotis
  2. Subtraction, by Khoi Vinh
  3. Mark Boulton Designs
  4. My Best Friend Since 9th Grade
  5. And of course… dmiessler.com
