The top story on Google’s news index is about how Joe Wilson believes that someone in the White House exposed his wife, Valerie Plame, as a CIA operative.
First of all, whoever did this, shame on you. You are a trecharous lout who deserves to be strung up by your toes. These people sacrificed their lives figuratively, they don’t get Christmas with families, they don’t get normal nuclear families, they live a double life, mortgaging what you and I take for granted so that we can take it for granted. One other thing, they also know that if they are unmasked they will sacrifice their lives - in a very real fashion. Whoever you are, you deserve to rot.
Wilson, Plame’s husband, says he believes the leak came from within the White House [CNN]. If this is so then it’s a filthy black smirch upon the administration.
Why would this happen? Well, it was Wilson who, amidst all the ‘misspeaking’ of Dick “Ha, I misspoke when I said we had proof of WMDs in Iraq” Cheney blew the whistle and said that the Saddam buying enriched uranium in Nigeria was bunk.

Speculation and Thoughts (strictly hypothetical)
Could it be? Could the administration be so petty, could they be so callous, could they be so evil so as to do something like this?
If (admittedly a very big if at this point, nota bene) this is the case it will ruin what shred of respect for the office exists within my generation. God, how could the Boomers deal with living through the lies of both Vietnam, Watergate, and something like this? How shaming, how irresponsible.
Even if my if turns out to be unfounded (i.e. involvement from the White House) isn’t it a shame that we no longer think that such an action is outside the realm of behavior of our executive office?
I can see the history books now: The CEO president? Indeed, just like CEO (and buddy) Kenneth Lay, Dennis Kozlowski….stonewall until you can’t anymore.
If the Clinton affairs (sexual and otherwise) were scandal in the era of 24-hour news, this would be scandal in the age of the ‘blog. The media can be subverted by the citizens. Amazing times we live in.

So with my father’s visit now come and gone I’ve been thinking about families and their fates. Why do some families rise and some others decay? How can someone fight against the chance that their progeny will squander that for which the ambitious have sacrificed and suffered? Can you mandate responsibility from beyond the grave?
It is clear that this question has been with man since the very earliest times. We shall recall in Plato’s Meno that Meno and Socrates have an extensive dialog concerning whether or not virtue (arete) could be taught. Ultimately, it became apparent that virtue could not be taught, for from the most virtuous houses of Athens, wicked scions were quickened.
Similarly, houses of wealth find themselves decaying for what the sons and daughters fail to learn. Mann’s Buddenbrooks makes this point through its ponderous length. I can’t remember which son it was, but I recall him living disowned by his father as some sort of shabby artist while his mother would sell the family silver to give him money for license, alcohol, and illness. Mann seems to think that structure cannot provide us a method for imbuing virtue, and non-intervention seems equally likely to produce failures.
While on the Teutonic bit, I’m inclined to remember Lou Reed’s “Men of Good Fortune” (off of the perfectly sublime in its hopelessness, Berlin LP) that reminds us that “Men of good fortune, often cause empires to fall” (Who’s in the White House these days?).
A family clearly has a goal. First, in a biological sense: To preserve the genetics of the current generation into the subsequent generation. To this end we amass resources (money), we educate, we love, in the hopes of molding individuals that will be able to survive, and in their turn re-propagate. Thus social skills, education, social normalization, all represent means by which to accomplish this goal.
Thus, the preservation of resources for future use by genetic carriers is the responsibility of the parent that is coeval with the propagation act. Clearly, survival increases as access to resources (and what resources can buy) increases.
Yet when a family has cold hard lucre, it is all too easily squandered. When many children are born, divisivness and can set in? The question is how to preserve wealth, amity, love, as well as distribute resources so as to provide the genetic carriers an edge?
I have a few ideas (I rather sexistly use father/son as I am thinking of my father and myself, with me as him and my son):

Establish a familial ‘kernel’ of capital.
A son must be ‘given’ access to a limited amount of the capital early especially when his salary is on the smallish side so that his earnings are best put to use. Typically this should be used to help him secure a property for abode.
A son must ‘earn’ the right to a full custodianship. Full access to this is contingent on his successful addition of a certain percentage of capital to the kernel.
Access to the kernel must be shut down on a weaning basis such that the parent generation, as its earnings / investment return capability waxes, their reliance upon the kernel decreases (and grows available to the child generation)
Man, there are so many loopholes and what ifs at this point, it’s a real mess. I suppose that’s why so many tycoons’ foundations gave their children a one-time payout of a lot of money and then declared hands off. It grows exponentially more difficult with more children.
Definitely something to consider further….
So Friday night I went down to enjoy the second day of ‘litquake’ at The Make Out Room. It’s part of a 4-day festival celebrating local-ish authors. There were 4 presenters and I really enjoyed all of their presentations (a breakdown follows) and saw the famoun Craig Newmark.
I hadn’t been planning on coming, but my father changed his flight from Friday night to Saturday morning.
So there I was, plowing my way through the tail end of happy hour, $3 Gin and T’s with cheap Anchor Steam, fun.
So here’s a workdown of the literary reading.
Three of the authors had a ‘queer’ angle to their work. I have thoughts on this in the read more section.
After the show I saw a sad scene near the BART station. I put that down in the read more section as well.
So the readers at the literary gathering were:
Justin Chin: He was wery funny, but very dark as well. I believe he may have a terminal illness because a lot of his work was framed within the lens of a fairly immanent death. He talked about the loneliness that one goes through when facing something like that. He also related it within the context of having grown up very traditionally Chinese.
Daphne Gottlieb: All a fury of small narrow braids and a Goth-Fetish (laytex, pvc?) dress (I say Goth because of the heavy cross motif). She did three mini-pieces and the one that was my favorite centered about her helping her mother get dressed. The work had a twist in it that when it hit I heard the breath go out of the room.
I remember thinking that Daphne’s work really seemed to justify my belief, verbalized in After Virtue that humans simply must have a narrative to their lives.
Tim’m T. West: Tim’m was definitely working a Joycian angle here. His works usuall incorporated the words (i’m lazy so here’s a Perl idiom for you) qw{ postmodern discourse dialect} etc. with an emphasis on the ‘read-aloud’ aspect, trying to run the sounds together to create something from the words. I thought that was OK, but his best piece was about the real (double whammy) burden of being both black and gay. He talked about how everyone (including the black community NB) was prepared to see him hit his lover, to fill him up with bulletholes, to call him names that invoke images of slavery, but no one could tolerate the thought of that preferred fist-to-face contact of rage transmuting to something kind and gentle - any physical affectation of love.
There was a break and I chatted with a girl leaning on the same pole. She was into psychology.
Alan Black: Bartender at the Edinburgh Castle in the Tenderloin then read a hilarious piece narrated by someone who he imagines watches the Christian Broadcasting Network 24/7. It was a good parody of the white man’s burden , be thankful for all we provide mentality that such programming promulgates. Like all good satire you are very aware of the black river of the author’s disagreement running through the entire thing.
Beth Lisick: Her entry was about how she decided that she was actually, totally straight. It chronicled her movement from suburban bliss in The Valley of Heart’s delight, to a politically and socially enlightened (ha ha, say all of us that attended liberal colleges) view that of course she was bi. This while bit of intelectualization ran very much agaist the fact that her biology was not particularly excited about the idea. She was very humorous
Regina Louise: Regina narrated the very difficult story of her having grown up in a foster home and being taken away from ‘white-momma’ - the only thing like a mother that she had known. She, in the mindset of her 11-year-old self, can only see that the social worker, a black woman, was taking her away from the only place where she was accepted without condition. She then relates how this break ultimately drove her to “act out” and misbehave. It also formed a healthy, I believe, basis for self-hatred that she, as a black woman, must have integrated into her self image. Not a pretty situation.
So obviously my piddly little summations cover in no way, shape, or form, the achievement that each of these writes has made for themselves. I’m hoping that all I could do is encourage you to get out and help your local writers continue to provide you differing mirrors for seeing your own life.
